Made in secret : the east van porn collective

Toen een jonge vrouw uit Vancouver voor de grap een soort manifest-gedicht voorlas, waarin zij hard van leer trok tegen porno, raakte ze een gevoelige snaar bij het publiek. Haar manifest was geen preutse zedenprekerij, maar wel een oproep voor betere, meer opwindende porno. Onder het motto 'wat je zelf doet, doe je beter' werd de East Van Porn Collective opgericht : een groepje jongeren die seksfilmpjes maken voor eigen consumptie. De film 'made in secret : the east van porn collective' (regisseur : One Tiny Whale !) is een zeer entertainende documentaire waarin de beweegredenen van deze jongeren uit de doeken worden gedaan. Jammer genoeg heb ik de tekst van het manifest niet kunnen vinden, want die is gewoonweg geniaal.

Uit één van de besprekingen die ik hierover gelezen heb : "As if you needed another reason to move to Canada, here’s one more. As something of a lark, this loose gaggle of friends and acquaintances in Vancouver started getting together a few years ago to watch and critique porn and other sex-related movies (like, say, Boogie Nights). The biggest topic of discussion – why doesn’t this stuff turn us on? One night, one of them read aloud her epic poem “Manifesto of the East Van Porn Collective,” which decried the sad state of pornography (“shot after shot of slot after slot”) and issued a call to arms: If we don’t like the porn we see, let’s make some of our own! Her joking rallying cry, though, touched a nerve or two, and the East Van Porn Collective was born . They’ve been making their own porn ever since. So come on along with the EVPC as they make their newest pansexual romp, BikeSexual, and wrestle with the idea of ‘going public.’ See, they’ve never shown their movies to anyone but themselves, and now here’s this documentary filmmaker following them around! This enthralling movie is something of a minor miracle, tackling some very weighty subjects with an ease and humor that belies the importance of its concerns. It’s an unparalleled depiction of a collective at work; a vehicle for airing issues about sex and porn and representation and body image and consumption and filmmaking; and an inspiring portrait of a really smart, lovely, unlikely group of people pushing themselves way out into the unknown. And it just might start a little revolution: May a thousand porn collectives bloom!"
